Richard S. Floyd papers, [ca. 1876-1889].

Letters written to and by Floyd, president of the James Lick Trust; accounts; some minutes of meetings, memoranda and reports of the Lick Trust; photographs, specifications and blueprints of Lick Observatory (some mounted in a scrapbook); clippings; legal papers in law suits to which Floyd was party. Correspondence relatese mainly to Floyd's private business affairs, the construction of the Lick Observatory and the purchase of its equipment, and the construction of other memorials designated in the Trust. Correspondents include Edward S. Holden, James E. Keeler, John Le Conte, Denis Kearney, Sherburne W. Burnham, Henry E. Mathews (secretary of the Trust) and Thomas E. Fraser (superintendant of construction for the Observatory). Included also: some correspondence of Milos Gopcevic, Floyd's son-in-law and heir, relating to business matters.

Politician. President of Workingmen's party of California (1877). Campaigned against capitalists and Chinese labor. Former established Committee of Public Safety to protect their interests. Kearney was arrested but beat charges against him. Eventually his party succeeded in banning Chinese immigration (1882).
